Zama and Fujita (1977) listed both D. kuhlii and an unidentified Dasyatis species. Only one specimen of the latter (MTUF 118) could be located, and it was provisionally determined by H. Ishihara to be D. kuhlii. This species shows considerable variation in color over its broad range. It may in the future be divided into two or more species.
